Velvet has more mass and a denser weave, which means it’s better at trapping air and reducing heat transfer. The same applies to curtains with thermal linings. These linings are specifically designed to block heat and cold, providing an extra layer of insulation between your window and your room. So, a black velvet curtain with a thermal lining will definitely block more heat than a simple, unlined black cotton curtain.
And then there’s your location. If you live in a hot, sunny climate, the effect of black curtains will be much more pronounced than if you live in a cooler, cloudier area. In hot climates, you’re dealing with intense sunlight for extended periods, which means your curtains are getting bombarded with heat for hours on end. In cooler climates, the sun’s rays are less intense and the days are shorter, so the heat absorption is less of a concern. Also consider the window. Single pane windows, as opposed to double or triple paned, allow far more thermal transfer.
